How much you can get
EAP is a one-time annual benefit paid to the utility company. IHCDA's draft FFY2027 state plan puts the regular benefit between $100 and $625, based on income, household size, fuel type, the bill and the type of home. Households with someone elderly, disabled, a young child or on active military duty get an extra $50, and approved households also get an electric benefit of $50 to $125, depending on income and household size.

When to apply
Applications for PY2027 open October 1, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. and close April 30, 2027 at 5:00 p.m. Local Service Providers have up to 55 days to decide, and the utility may then take another 30 days to apply the benefit. A direct-pay benefit can take up to 120 days from approval to arrive. Keep paying your bills while you wait.
Emergency and crisis help
Tell your Local Service Provider at once if you have a disconnection notice, are disconnected, or are within 10 days of running out of propane or fuel oil (or at or below 25% of a tank). The provider must act within 48 hours, or within 18 hours in a life-threatening case. The draft FFY2027 plan sets crisis help at up to $400 per utility and $800 in total. Under Indiana's moratorium law (IC 8-1-2-121), a regulated utility cannot shut off a household that is eligible for and has applied for EAP between December 1 and March 15.
