Why Your Door Came Off Track
This is the section that saves you money, because "the door is off track" describes a symptom, not a cause. Something made it happen, and if that something isn't fixed the door will come off again.
Ranked roughly by how often they're responsible:
1. A broken lift cable
The most common cause. The cables carry the door's weight from the bottom brackets up to the drums on the spring shaft. When one snaps, that side of the door drops, the door racks diagonally, and the rollers on the low side pop out of the track.
What you'd see: a door hanging visibly crooked, one side lower than the other, often with a loose cable dangling. Cost to fix properly: $100–$350 for the cable pair, plus the track work. See cable repair.
2. A seized or collapsed roller
A roller whose bearings have failed stops rolling and starts dragging. Under enough load it climbs out of the track or shears its stem.
What you'd see: grinding or scraping noises for weeks beforehand, and a roller that won't spin freely when you turn it by hand. Cost: $110–$250 for a full set.
3. Loose or shifted track brackets
The brackets holding the track to the wall and ceiling work loose over years of vibration. The track drifts out of alignment, the gap widens, and eventually a roller finds its way out.
What you'd see: visible gaps between the track and the door edge, or a track that moves when you push it. Cost: $75–$200, and it's preventable with an annual bolt check.
4. Impact
A car reversing into the door, a ladder, a bike falling against it. Obvious when it's the cause.

5. A door out of balance
Weakened springs mean the opener is fighting the door's weight on every cycle, which racks the door slightly each time. Over months that wear works the door out of alignment.

6. Debris in the track
The simplest and cheapest. A stone, a screw, a hardened lump of old grease.
What you'd see: a door that binds at the same point every time. Cost: free, if you catch it.
The point
If you pay to have the track realigned and the cable that caused it isn't replaced, you're calling again within weeks — and paying another trip fee for the privilege. When a technician quotes track work, ask them directly: "What made it come off?" A good answer names a specific part. "It just happens over time" is not an answer.
Steel vs. Nylon Rollers
Most doors ship with steel rollers because they're cheap. They're also loud, and their exposed bearings wear.

This is a legitimate upgrade, and worth saying so plainly. A site that treats every suggested extra as an upsell isn't useful to you — it just teaches you to say no to the right things and the wrong things equally.
Nylon rollers on sealed bearings are the tier that matters. The difference in noise on an attached garage with a bedroom above is the sort of thing people notice every single day and mention unprompted years later. For a $40 to $70 difference across the whole door, it's among the best value decisions available on a garage door — second only to choosing 25,000-cycle springs.
The version to decline: nylon rollers on a detached workshop nobody sleeps near, quoted at a premium.
Realign, Replace a Section, or Replace the Set
Realignment ($125–$300). The track is sound but out of position — brackets loosened, or a minor bend that can be worked straight. The technician loosens the mounts, brings the track back to spec, and retightens. This is the majority of track service calls.
Single section replacement ($150–$350). A crimped, creased or badly bent section, where the rest of the track is fine. Possible when your track is a standard profile still in production — most residential track is 2-inch, and most is interchangeable across brands. Ask whether your profile can be matched before assuming.
Full set replacement ($300–$700). Justified when the track has been hit hard, when multiple sections are damaged, when the profile is obsolete and can't be matched, or when the door is being replaced anyway.
One warning
A door and its track are a matched system. Track is specified for the door's weight and the headroom available. Fitting a lightweight universal track to a heavy insulated or wood door is a false economy that produces binding, premature roller wear, and — eventually — another door off the track.
If a quote is notably cheaper than the others on track work, ask what gauge track is being fitted.
Maintenance That Prevents All of This

Wipe the track — don't grease it. This is the mistake that circulates as advice on plenty of home-repair pages and it's wrong. The rollers ride through the track; the track is a guide, not a bearing surface. Grease or spray lubricant in the track collects dust, grit and debris, forms an abrasive paste, and accelerates wear on exactly the rollers you were trying to help. Wipe the tracks clean with a dry cloth and leave them dry.
Lubricate the right things. A garage-door-specific lubricant (silicone or lithium, not WD-40 as a lubricant) on:
- Roller bearings and stems
- Hinges
- The torsion spring itself — a light coat reduces friction between coils
- The opener's chain or screw drive, per the manufacturer
Check the roller stems. With the door closed, look at each roller. Any that wobbles in its hinge, won't spin by hand, or shows a chewed-up bearing is on its way out.
Tighten the brackets. Lag bolts holding track brackets to the wall and ceiling work loose over years of vibration. A socket wrench and five minutes.
Listen. Doors announce their failures. A change in sound — a new grind, a rhythmic click, a rumble that wasn't there — precedes most roller failures by weeks. That's your free warning.
Inspect the cables while you're there. Run your eye, not your hand, along both cables looking for broken strands or rust. Catching a fraying cable early is a scheduled $150 call; a snapped one is a stuck door, an emergency rate, and possibly the track damage this page is about.
