Why three times, and not one

The multiplier isn't arbitrary markup, and understanding what it covers is what makes the rest of this page useful rather than just suspicious.

Inventory. Torsion springs come in dozens of combinations of wire gauge, inside diameter and length, matched to your door's specific weight. A shop that arrives with the right pair on the first visit is carrying stock it paid for and will hold for months.

Tools and skill. Winding bars, a correctly sized shaft, and someone who has done this a few thousand times. The tooling is cheap; the not-getting-hurt is not.

Insurance. Liability and workers' comp on a trade where a mistake puts someone in hospital costs real money per job.

Warranty. If the spring fails in a year, they come back for free. That's priced in.

Unbillable time. Drive time, quoting, the calls that don't convert. A technician who bills six hours in an eight-hour day is doing well.

Where the line is

  • 2–3x the part price plus labor — normal. This is the trade working as intended.
  • 4–5x — high, but not automatically wrong. Ask for the itemisation, and ask what cycle rating you're getting. High-cycle springs cost more, and a good shop will say so.
  • 6x and above — ask the question directly: "what am I paying for beyond the springs and the hour?" A straight answer is a good sign. Evasion isn't.
  • 10x — get another quote. The most-cited example in homeowner forums is an $1,800 quote for springs the homeowner then found for around $100 at a hardware store. Even generous accounting doesn't reach $1,800.

Cycle Ratings — 10k vs 25k vs 80k

This is the single most useful thing to understand before the technician arrives, because it's the one decision that's genuinely yours.

Springs don't wear out by age. They wear out by cycles — one cycle being one full open and one full close.

10,000 cycles is the builder-grade default. It's what most doors are fitted with new, because it's the cheapest thing that satisfies a spec. On a family home where the garage door is the main entrance — four or more cycles a day is typical — it's a seven-year part.

25,000 cycles is the honest default for most households. For $20 to $40 more on a $500 job, you roughly double or triple the life. There is no version of this arithmetic where that's a bad trade.

50,000 and 80,000 cycles are real products with real uses — a household with teenage drivers cycling the door eight or ten times a day, or a detached workshop in constant use. But on a two-car garage in a household of two, an 80k spring will outlive the door it's fitted to. That's the upsell to decline.

The sentence to say

When you book the job, say this:

"Fit 25,000-cycle springs and tell me the price difference."

It does three things. You get better springs. You find out immediately whether the shop stocks them (good ones do). And you've signalled that you know what a cycle rating is, which changes the rest of the conversation.

If the answer is "we only carry standard," that's a legitimate answer from a small operation — but it's worth one more phone call.

Torsion is the better system. The door is more balanced, the travel is smoother, the springs last longer, and there's less stress on tracks, rollers and the opener. Nearly all doors installed today use torsion.

Extension springs are common on older and lighter doors. They work, they're cheaper, and they're not dangerous provided safety cables run through them. Those cables are what stops a broken spring from launching across the garage — and they are a code requirement, not an optional extra.

Conversion runs $300–$600. Worth considering if your door has extension springs, you plan to keep it another decade, and the springs are due anyway. You're paying the difference between a $250 job and a $500 job to get a better system with a longer service life.

Why Both Springs, Always

If your door has two springs and one broke, a shop might offer to replace only the broken one and save you $50 to $100. Decline it, for three reasons.

1. The other spring is the same age. Both were fitted on the same day and have cycled the identical number of times. If one reached the end of its fatigue life, the other is within months of doing the same. You will pay another trip fee, another labor charge, and lose the use of your door again.

2. Mismatched springs unbalance the door. A new spring and a twelve-year-old spring don't pull equally. The door racks slightly on every cycle, which accelerates wear on rollers, cables, hinges and the opener — and a racking door is how doors come off track.

3. The labor is already paid for. The technician has the shaft apart, the winding bars out, and the door supported. Fitting the second spring adds fifteen minutes. That's why a pair costs only $50 to $100 more than a single despite twice the parts — and it's why replacing one is the worst value on the menu.

A shop that proposes replacing one spring to hit a lower headline number isn't saving you money. It's the one red flag in this trade that runs opposite to the usual upsell direction, which is exactly why it catches people out.

How to Tell a Spring Is Broken

Usually it's unmistakable, but here's the checklist:

  • A loud bang. Most broken springs announce themselves — often overnight or on a cold morning, heard from inside the house. People frequently mistake it for something falling in the garage.
  • A visible gap in the coil. Look at the torsion spring on the shaft above the door. A broken one has an obvious two-to-three-inch separation.
  • The door lifts four inches and stops. The opener's force sensor detects the load and gives up.
  • The door is impossibly heavy by hand. Pull the emergency release and lift. With good springs, a door lifts with modest effort and stays where you leave it. With a broken spring, it feels like lifting the actual weight of the door — because you are.

  • The door slams down. If it drops rather than lowering under control, stop using it entirely and keep people clear.

One thing not to do: don't keep operating the opener to "see if it catches." Running an opener against a broken spring is how a $400 spring job becomes a $400 spring job plus a $250 gear kit.
