Methodology
The CostInspector Home Service Cost Index measures the relative cost of hiring home service professionals across all 50 US states. Each state receives a cost index score where 100 represents the national average.
Data Sources
- Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) regional cost-of-living indices
- Contractor pricing surveys across HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other trades
- State licensing fee structures and regulatory compliance costs
- Regional material and supply cost data
How We Calculate
We combine cost-of-living data with trade-specific pricing surveys to derive a single regional multiplier for each state. This multiplier is applied to national average service costs to produce state-specific estimates. The national average is normalized to 1.0 (index score of 100).
Limitations
- State-level averages may not reflect metro vs. rural differences within a state
- Seasonal demand spikes (e.g., AC repair in summer) are not captured in annual averages
- Specialty services or unusual configurations may fall outside typical ranges

Frequently Asked Questions
How is the Cost Index calculated?
The Cost Index uses Bureau of Labor Statistics regional cost-of-living data and contractor pricing surveys to calculate a multiplier for each state relative to the national average (100). A state with an index of 135 means home services cost approximately 35% more than the national average.
Why do home service costs vary so much by state?
Several factors drive regional price differences: local cost of living, state licensing requirements, labor market competition, material transportation costs, and climate-related demand. States with higher costs of living (Hawaii, California, New York) consistently have higher service costs.
How often is this data updated?
We update the Cost Index annually using the latest available BLS data and contractor pricing surveys. The current data reflects 2026 pricing. Bookmark this page to check back for updates.
Can I use this data in my article or research?
Yes! We encourage journalists, researchers, and bloggers to reference this data. Use the citation block or embed code provided below the map. We just ask that you link back to this page as the source.
Does the Cost Index apply to all home services equally?
The index reflects an overall regional multiplier. Individual services may vary — for example, HVAC costs might be higher in cold climates while AC costs are higher in warm states. Use the service selector in our table to see service-specific estimates.
Are these exact prices I should expect to pay?
No. The Cost Index shows relative cost differences between states and provides estimated ranges. Actual prices depend on the specific job, contractor, materials, and local market conditions. Use our free calculators for more precise estimates.
