Goodman Furnace Repair: What It Costs and Common Problems

Ignitor Failures ($125–$350)

Hot surface ignitors are the most common repair on Goodman furnaces. Goodman uses silicon nitride ignitors in most models, which are durable but can crack due to thermal cycling over time. The good news: Goodman ignitors are inexpensive and widely available.

Draft Inducer Motor ($200–$1,200)

The draft inducer motor is a known weak point on several Goodman models, particularly the GMS, GMT, and GMH series. Symptoms include loud humming at startup, failure to ignite, or pressure switch errors (since the inducer creates the draft the pressure switch monitors).

Control Board Issues ($200–$900)

Goodman furnaces in certain model years had higher-than-average control board failure rates. Power surges are a common cause. If your Goodman furnace suddenly stops responding to the thermostat or displays erratic behavior, the control board is a likely suspect.

Pressure Switch Errors ($100–$300)

Pressure switch faults are common but often aren't caused by the switch itself. Check for:

• Blocked condensate drain (most common cause)
• Failed draft inducer motor
• Cracked or disconnected pressure tubing
• Blocked flue or exhaust vent

Heat Exchanger

Goodman heat exchangers are generally reliable and come with an industry-standard limited lifetime warranty when registered.
